Rdio Combines Social Media and Music

Rdio announced today that their invitation only social music service is open to the American and Canadian public. Rdio, pronounced r-dee-o, was created by Skype (News – Alert) cofounders, Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström, and combines social networking with online music streaming.

This revolutionary consortium allows users to follow others with the same taste in music and allows them to discover new songs and artists in a library featuring over seven million songs.
Subscriptions start at $5 per month which allows the subscriber to only access music on Rdio when online. However, $10 a month the subscriber can save playlists and songs that can be listened to offline on either their desktop or smartphone.
Rdio has many of the major labels on board including EMI Music, Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group (News – Alert) and Warner Music Group. Along with this list of big fish, Rdio will also be streaming music from smaller independent labels to help stimulate the recognition and hopefully jumpstart careers for underground and up-and-coming artists.
Rdio will have to compete with well-established, subscription-based music streamers such as Rapsody and Napster.
Drew Larner, CEO of Rdio, said in a statement that “People want the music on their desktop and mobile to be connected without having to pull out a cable. That’s what we’ve built – a seamless way to access your music no matter where you are.”
If Rdio proves to be functional and goes beyond expectations then it might help the ever-suffering music industry survive the effects of illegal downloading.
